Biological Cleanup of the Tiscape Lagoon, Nigaragua

Datum: 20-3-2020

In a period of nearly 3 months a lagoon with a size of 0,4 km2 a depth of 20 meters was almost free of blue/green algae. Many young fishes where spotted due to the increased content of oxygen restoring of the food chain. Phase 1 is competed.

Until this present moment it was not thinkable to clean a lake in a biological way and that easy and cost effective.

There will be no more excuse to not consider biological remediation as a valid solution for the cleanup of surface water worldwide.

This report should get the attention of (impact) investors, authorities in order to clean and recover al the sick waterbodies in the world.

  • Clean water attracts people for recreation and tourism. This has a positive impact for the economy and will be investigated by the University (UNAN)
  • Clean water makes people healthy
  • Clean water restores the ecosystems and boost flora and fauna.

Executive Summaray

Contaminated surface water is a world wide problem. Everybody knows this. There are no creative, sustainable and ecomonically feasible solutions to tackle this problem. The problem is far too big and expensive for most of the goverments. Priority is housing, production of food and other initiatives that generate revenues and jobs. Unfortunately, our environment is the last to be addressed because it only costs money.

Plastics, organic contimination (sewage), excess fertilizers and all kinds of industrial waste end up in streams, rivers, lakes and oceans. It causes eutrophication and kills flora and fauna. We are poisoning our own food and living enviroment. Ad-hoc solutions such as dreging, sedimentation with chemicals such as Aluminium Sulphate or Hydrogen Peroxide are not sustainable. Rivers and lakes become more and more polluted and it seems almost impossible to generate a breaktrough.

Nonetheless, an innovative methode to generate this breaktrough and clean a waterbody in a 100% biological way , is develoipped and tested WITH SUCCES in Nigaragua. The philosophy behind this method is to see a waterbody in a more holistic way: A lake should also be considered and treated as a body. If it is contaminated( sick) you can give medicines (chemicals) or opt for boosting the immunesystem (healty nutrition). Like in all living bodies, oxygen plays the key role to combat pathogens and contamination. Oxygens stimulates the growth of the “good”microrganisms so a lake will be able to restore its natural balance of the (water) body themselves.

Landustrie and Wise Use International have introduced a combination of mechanical land biological aeration wich is applicable for each type of waterbody. The method helps the lake in Nigaragua to recover its health and boost its immunesystem so it can combat pathogens and other contamination by itself.

The Pilot project is executed in the Tiscapa Lagoon, a seriously contaminated lagoon in Managua (Nigaragua). A combination of mechanical aeration with a biological activator (PoCo) resulted in a very quick bioremediation of the lagoon.

After testing period of two months evidence was observed clearly and confirmed at the labratory. The blue/green algae bloom has dissappeared, the reduction of the smell is significant and many new born little fish are counted in the lagoon.

Innovation:

Mechanical aeration is an existing technology that is used in water treatment plants to provide a large volume of oxygen to a contaminated medium in a mechanical way. Oxygen stimulates the growth of beneficial microorganisms that neutralize the effects of patogens.

The innovation of this demonstration project is Biological Aeriation with an activator : PoCo is a 100% biological activator of microorganisms. It provides the nutrition for certain groups of microorganisms at the beginning of the food chain and enhances the metabolism of the waterbody by making the nutrients available. It activates and wakes up microorganisms that produce oxygen (such beneficial phytoplankton and zooplankton) instead of consuming it (pathogens). By using the current and natural flow and wind, the activator can reach all the corners of the lake in a very quick way. If a lake is not in balance , it becomes ill. Blooms of blue algae, high levels of E-Coli, salmonella and other pathogens take over the lake and consume the available oxygen. Zooplankton will die and fish will disappear due to suffocation. PoCo provides nutrients tot he microrganisms that combat the pathogens and practically helps the waterbody to recover itself with auto-oxygenation.

Time table of phase 1 Tiscapa Lagoon

December 3rd 2019: Official Inauguration of aerator in the Laguna. The green algae bloom is caused by omnipresent phytoplankton (cyanobacteria).

February 20th 2020: The algae bloom has disappeared for > 80% due to mechanical aeration and activation with PoCo.

“We conclude that biological measurement is a valid solution for surface water  cleaning, noting that it has even been considerably improved with the aerator  and the product with nutrient and biological activator PoCo”

“We appreciate the cooperation provided by Wise Use, the contributes and  knowledge in the search for solutions and joint work for the recovery and  maintenance of our nature reserve and protected area.”

Total Coliforms are a family of bacteria that focus commonly on plants, soil, animals including humans. For Tank 2, a considerable decrease in total coliforms from 3.30x 10 to 2 organisms per 100ml is observed. The additive added to Tank 2 had a good response in reaction to the decrease of total coliform organisms in 100ml.

CIRA/UNAN- Managua:

The Center for Research in Aquatic Resources of Nicaragua (CIRA/UNAN-Managua) is an academic and research institution dedicated to contributing to the use and protection of the water resources of Nicaragua and Central America.

Feasibility:

The focus of the pilot project was to demonstrate the technical feasibility of this new way of bioremediation. The technology has been proven first at the laboratory scale at CIRA (University) and also in real scale when the aerator was placed into the lagoon and operetad for several months.

Compared to other options like dreging or chemical sanitation, this new natural method seems to be very cost effective. Dreging a lagoon or building a chemical water treatment plant costs tens of millions of dollars.
